Franklin Richards, the most powerful child in the Marvel universe, is set to take center stage in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”. This upcoming MCU film introduces Franklin as the son of Reed Richards and Sue Storm—born with cosmic-level mutant abilities that allow him to reshape reality and even revive entire universes.
Originally created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Franklin first appeared in “Fantastic Four Annual #6” (1968). Born under life-threatening circumstances due to cosmic radiation, he survived thanks to a powerful artifact his father retrieved from the Negative Zone. The child was later revealed to be an Omega-level mutant capable of telekinesis, reality warping, future sight, and creating entire universes.
Franklin has drawn both awe and criticism from fans for being *”overpowered”*—his powers rival those of cosmic entities like Galactus and Dormammu, yet he’s just a child still learning control. One infamous comic moment saw him accidentally de-age his sister back into the womb. To limit himself, Franklin reportedly only uses his powers one day a year.
Despite his young age, Franklin has saved the universe multiple times. He once defeated Mephisto, revived Galactus as his cosmic champion, and—most notably—helped his father rebuild the multiverse after the events of “Secret Wars #9” (2016).
In the MCU, Franklin’s storyline seems equally monumental. According to early clips, Galactus arrives on Earth not to consume it—but to claim Franklin for himself. This sets up a dramatic battle in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”, where the team must protect both their son and the planet.
Franklin Richards is expected to play a key role in shaping Phase 6 of the MCU, leading toward “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars”. His presence also paves the way for Marvel to introduce mutants on a larger scale. However, Marvel must balance his immense power by either limiting it or raising the stakes with stronger foes.
Either way, Franklin Richards signals a bold and expansive future for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
