According to a report by Portuguese outlet Record, Viktor Gyökeres, who shares the same agent as Lindelöf Hasan Cetinkaya, was disheartened by the manner in which Lindelöf was phased out at Old Trafford. Despite Lindelöf’s desire to remain and continue contributing to the club, Manchester United opted not to extend his contract, a decision that reportedly frustrated Cetinkaya and influenced Gyökeres’s outlook.
The striker had been identified as a top target for United ahead of the 2025/26 season. His goal-scoring prowess, particularly during his time at Sporting Lisbon, where he scored 54 goals in 52 appearances during the most recent campaign, made him a standout candidate for United’s forward line. He previously played under manager Rúben Amorim at Sporting, further connecting him to the club’s transfer strategy.

However, the situation surrounding Lindelöf reportedly cast a shadow over the negotiations. Lindelöf, who joined United in 2017 from Benfica for £31 million, made 284 appearances across all competitions. His role diminished significantly in the most recent season, featuring in only 25 matches, his lowest since arriving in England. With his contract expiring this summer, United elected not to renew it.

Gyökeres’s rejection now leaves Manchester United searching for alternative attacking options. Meanwhile, Arsenal is said to be leading the race for the striker’s signature, with Juventus also monitoring the situation closely. Arsenal’s pursuit includes a proposed transfer fee of €63.5 million with additional bonuses, and Gyökeres is reportedly open to the move.
The development underscores the increasingly complex dynamics in top-level football, where player-agent relationships and internal club decisions can significantly influence transfer outcomes.
