Production has officially begun on HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter TV series, and fans now have their first look at the new Harry Potter, played by 11-year-old Dominic McLoughlin. On July 14, HBO released the first image of the young actor in costume, marking the beginning of what is expected to be a decade-long project.

The new series, which will adapt J.K. Rowling’s original novels more faithfully than the movies, is being filmed at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, Hertfordshire — the same iconic location where the original eight films were shot.
New Cast Members Announced
Along with McLoughlin’s reveal, several key supporting cast members were officially announced:
- Laurie Wilmott as Neville Longbottom
- Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley
- Louise Brealey as Madam Rolanda Hooch
- Anton Lesser as Garrick Ollivander
Previously confirmed cast members include:
- John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore
- Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid
- Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall
- Papa Essiedu as Severus Snape
The three child actors playing Harry, Ron, and Hermione were revealed earlier in May 2025.
What Makes This Adaptation Different
Unlike the original film series, HBO’s Harry Potter adaptation is designed as a long-form TV series, allowing more time to explore each book in greater detail. The series is expected to span up to 10 years, with Season 1 scheduled to premiere in 2027.

According to HBO, this version will be a “faithful adaptation of the original books,” offering fans the chance to experience the Wizarding World with a deeper focus on characters, plotlines, and magical lore that couldn’t fit into the original movies.
The show is assembling a top-tier production crew, including:
- Adriano Goldman, Emmy-winning cinematographer for The Crown
- Kate Hall, acclaimed hair and makeup designer
Their involvement hints at the cinematic quality and high production standards HBO is aiming for.
The first season is expected to air in 2027, though no exact release date has been confirmed. With filming underway and the cast in place, anticipation continues to build as fans around the world prepare to return to Hogwarts — this time, on the small screen.
