In one of the most tragic and disturbing incidents connected to K-pop fandom culture, a 13-year-old girl from China lost her life during a conflict with her father, Zhou Kai, in November 2013.
At the heart of the tragedy was her growing obsession with the popular K-pop group EXO a fixation that had begun to affect her studies, behavior, and family life.
According to reports from India Times, the confrontation began over something seemingly minor: a missing pencil sharpener. But Zhou had already been alarmed by his daughter’s refusal to attend school and her increasing disconnection from reality. She spent most of her time online, managing fan accounts and immersing herself in the world of EXO. Despite his efforts to reach out, Zhou found himself being pushed further away.

His daughter’s words during one of their arguments would prove to be a heartbreaking turning point: “I love them a thousand times more than I love you.” Her declaration, prioritizing idols over her own family, struck a devastating blow.
In a moment of emotional breakdown, Zhou retrieved a kitchen knife, allegedly to scare her. But in an uncontrollable fit of rage, he fatally stabbed her. Overwhelmed by remorse, Zhou attempted to end his own life, but survived.
One year later in court, Zhou Kai confessed to the crime, revealing the deep emotional chasm that had developed between father and daughter. Her room had become a shrine of EXO merchandise, and she had even demanded significant sums of money to attend concerts—unaware of the financial strain on the family.

“I felt like I didn’t exist in her world anymore,” Zhou stated tearfully during the trial. “When she said idols are better than all the parents like me… I couldn’t take it anymore.”
This tragic case continues to echo as a chilling reminder of the potential dangers of unchecked idol worship, emotional isolation, and strained family dynamics. It underscores the importance of communication, mental health awareness, and guidance in households—especially in an era where parasocial relationships with celebrities can deeply affect young minds.
