On May 20, Barbie Hsu’s mother, Hwang Chun-mei, shared a heartfelt update through her personal channel, revealing that Koo is creating a memorial statue in honor of Barbie to mark the first anniversary of her passing.

“He’s creating a beautiful statue for my daughter’s memorial,” she wrote. “The location is lovely, and every detail in Koo Jun-yup’s sketches is filled with love. He’s deeply loyal and kindhearted. Anyone would be lucky to meet someone like him in their lifetime. This is true love.”

According to Taiwanese media, Koo has been visiting Barbie’s grave at Jinbaoshan Cemetery daily, despite the heat and his own deteriorating health. It’s been three months since her passing, but his sorrow remains raw: he has reportedly lost around 12 kilograms and has become noticeably tanned from standing under the sun for extended periods during his daily visits.

A recent Mother’s Day family photo showed a visibly thinner Koo, sparking concern among fans and loved ones alike. Many praised his quiet, unwavering loyalty to Barbie, which has become a poignant symbol of enduring love in the public eye.

Tragedy struck in February 2025 during a family trip to Japan, when Barbie passed away due to complications from influenza and pneumonia. Her sudden death devastated fans across Asia.

Now, as Koo Jun-yup works on a memorial statue with the help of a designer friend, the project serves as both a final tribute and an emotional outlet. Every line he draws and every visit he makes reflect a profound grief—and a love that has clearly withstood the test of time.
