Although the Holy Knights (also known as God’s Knights) have only recently been introduced, they’ve already drawn major attention for their unique Devil Fruit powers and bizarre character designs. Among them, Gunko’s design has especially puzzled fans for quite some time even sparking a wave of humorous memes.
However, “One Piece” may have provided a genius (and funny) explanation for why Gunko doesn’t wear pants and it’s more amusing than you might expect.
Why Gunko Doesn’t Wear Pants
From Shamrock and Gunko to Sommers and Killingham, all the Holy Knights introduced so far have highly distinctive character designs. For example, St. Sommers wields a spiked sword hilt that hints at his Devil Fruit abilities, while St. Killingham’s appearance foreshadowed the name and nature of his Devil Fruit long before it was officially revealed.
In Gunko’s case, her goggles and heterochromia (two-toned eyes) led some fans to speculate that she might be a double agent secretly working for Dragon, or at the very least, someone with ties to the Revolutionary Army.
But the fact that Gunko doesn’t wear pants has been a major talking point — mostly for comedic reasons. Since her first appearance, this aspect of her design has drawn both controversy and mockery, with some fans even jokingly theorizing that Gunko and Franky might be connected due to their shared habit of pants-less fashion.
Chapter 1144 Offers a Hilarious Clue
In Chapter 1144, it’s revealed that Gunko may be a huge fan of Brook, the Straw Hat Pirates’ musician, who became a world-famous rock star during the time skip. In the chapter, Gunko is seen listening to music on a Tone Dial, which St. Sommers refers to as her post-meal daily ritual.
Sommers then asks her what her favorite song is. Gunko unexpectedly reveals that it’s Brook’s hit track “New World.” If Gunko truly is a die-hard fan of Soul King Brook, to the point of listening to his music after every meal, then the real reason she doesn’t wear pants might actually be a tribute to Brook’s classic catchphrase his obsession with seeing women’s underwear.
So perhaps, in the event that she ever meets Brook, she’s already prepared to fulfill his long-standing comedic wish to see someone’s panties.
Of course, only time will tell whether Gunko actually crosses paths with her idol. If it happens, her reaction to Brook could very well confirm the truth behind her no-pants design.
