Six years have passed since the late Goo Hara, yet fans and fellow artists continue to honor her memory. Goo Hara debuted with KARA in 2008 and quickly became one of the group’s most beloved members. With hit songs like Pretty Girl, Honey, Mister, Lupin, and Mamma Mia, KARA rose to top-tier status in K-pop. Their success extended far beyond Korea; in 2013, they became the first Korean girl group to perform at Tokyo Dome, marking a major milestone in the global spread of K-pop.
In 2015, Goo Hara released her first solo album and continued activities both in Korea and overseas. She also made a strong impression on variety shows with her bright and cheerful personality. Often compared to Japanese superstar Namie Amuro for her visuals and charm, she became the group’s mascot—an idol born to shine.

However, her life took a painful turn in 2018 when she became embroiled in a highly publicized assault and blackmail case involving her former boyfriend. The exposure of her private life, ongoing legal battles, and a surge of malicious comments brought immense emotional suffering. Although her ex-partner was eventually sentenced to one year in prison for assault and intimidation, he was acquitted of illegal filming charges an outcome Goo Hara was preparing to appeal.
Goo Hara was found dead at her residence in Gangnam-gu, Seoul on November 24th, 2019. She was 28 years old at the time. The sudden news of her death shocked not only KARA members but also colleagues in the entertainment industry and fans.
Moreover, the announcement of her death came just a month after the passing of her close friend Sulli. Goo Hara mourned Sulli and expressed her deep sorrow, “Go and live as you truly want there. I’ll live hard and work hard for you.“

During her lifetime, Goo Hara endured significant suffering due to an assault and blackmail case involving her ex-boyfriend. She revealed that while the ex-boyfriend claimed mutual violence, he had threatened to release private videos, exposing the issue of “revenge porn” to the public. The case persisted even after her passing, and her ex-boyfriend was eventually sentenced to one year in prison.
Following her tragic death, Goo Hara’s older brother advocated for the enactment of the “Goo Hara Act,” aimed at strengthening parental responsibilities. In August of this year, a bill was passed by the National Assembly stipulating that “individuals who have severely neglected their duty to support direct ascendants or descendants may have their inheritance rights restricted.” This legislation honors Goo Hara’s legacy by transforming her ordeal into meaningful legal reform.

In November 2022, KARA members gathered to commemorate their 15th debut anniversary and the third anniversary of Goo Hara’s passing.
In January this year, KARA received the K-POP Special Award at the 32nd Seoul Music Awards. Member Han Seungyeon emotionally stated “There’s a friend who couldn’t be here with us. We’ll accept this award on behalf of that friend“, bringing tears to those present.

Her passing led to significant societal reflection. Public awareness regarding image-based sexual violence and lenient sentencing for perpetrators grew substantially. The inheritance dispute involving her biological mother, who had abandoned her parental duties, also sparked calls for legal reform. Goo Hara’s brother, Goo Ho-in, pushed for the creation of the “Goo Hara Act,” which successfully passed the National Assembly in August 2024 and will take effect in January 2025.
A recent BBC documentary highlighted Goo Hara’s crucial role in aiding investigative reporting on the Burning Sun scandal, prompting renewed appreciation and sympathy for the late star.
KARA has also continued to commemorate her. The group has kept her name listed as an official member, honoring her place in their history. After reuniting in 2022, they went a step further in July 2024 by releasing “HELLO,” a six-member track featuring Goo Hara’s previously recorded Korean vocals allowing her voice to join them once more.
