On September 28, a topic titled “The reason why Min Hee-jin’s lawyer’s fee reached 2.3 billion won in 5 months is because of HYBE’s strategic lawsuit tactic” was published on the Korean forum “theqoo”, garnering significant attention.
In particular, the author of the topic pointed out that according to law firm Kim & Chang, HYBE is filing continuous lawsuits against Min Hee-jin even when it’s impossible for them to win. This is in order to consistently create new issues and maintain a state of dispute, forcing Min Hee-jin to always have to hire legal services.
As a result of this, Min Hee-jin’s lawyer fees have reached 2.3 billion won (approx 1.7 million USD), leading to the former ADOR CEO to consider selling her house to cover such a huge amount.
It was also pointed out that this is considered a common and strategic tactic, often used to stifle the trialed party. In this case, the plaintiff’s goal is not to win the case, but to force the other party to pay the costs of legal action and to cause them to give up their activities due to fear and mental distress.
In fact, in the United States, several states, including California, regulations have been implemented to hinder this tactic, and a similar amendment was proposed in Korea, but ended up not passing the National Assembly.
