Public opinion remains cold, to the extent that anyone remotely associated with Lee Na-eun ends up receiving criticism. This time, YouTuber KwakTube became the target.
On Sep 16th, KwakTube, who had previously spoken about his experiences as a victim of school bullying, faced backlash for featuring former APRIL member Lee Na-eun, who is still embroiled in unresolved “bullying” allegations, in one of his YouTube videos. Lee Na-eun debuted as a member of APRIL in 2015 and also pursued acting. However, in early 2022, APRIL became engulfed in controversy over bullying within the group. Lee Na-eun was accused of leading the harassment of fellow member Lee Hyun-joo during their time in the group.
Additionally, Lee Na-eun was also named as a perpetrator of school bullying. In response, her side filed a defamation lawsuit against “A”, who had accused her of bullying, and “A” was found guilty of spreading false information. Despite this legal victory, the ongoing controversy led to APRIL’s disbandment. Furthermore, Lee Na-eun had to step down from her role in SBS’s drama “Taxi Driver” and took a hiatus.
Following the backlash, the video featuring KwakTube and Lee Na-eun has since been removed from YouTube. The Ministry of Education’s public service advertisement for the 2024 School Violence Prevention Campaign, which starred KwakTube, has also been made private.
KwakTube isn’t the only one who has faced criticism for associating with Lee Na-eun. Actress Ji Ye-eun and broadcaster Dex also came under fire after posting selfies with her on their SNS, with some ridiculing them as “birds of a feather”.
The public’s view of Lee Na-eun remains cold. While she may be free from legal constraints, the reality is different. She is now living with the stigma of being a “controversial celebrity”.
For now, Lee Na-eun is preparing for her return to acting. How much will the public’s cold reaction affect the success of her upcoming projects?
