SM & HYBE Criticized for Lack of Response to Deepfake Issue

On September 2, a topic titled “K-pop agencies that announced they will respond to the issue of deepfake” was published on the Korean forum ‘theqoo’, attracting over 40,000 views within just a few hours.

Previously, it was unveiled that 53% of the victims of deepfake pornography videos around the world are Korean female celebrities, evoking huge distress among fans and the Korean public alike.

According to the aforementioned topic, various K-pop agencies have since announced legal actions against deepfake, including JYP, YG, ModHaus, FCENM, ATRP, among others.

However, despite being top players in the industry, SM and HYBE have made no announcement to protect their artists against deepfake crimes, despite fans voicing their demands for immediate actions. The inactivity from SM and HYBE also angered a lot of general netizens.

Below are some comments from netizens:

  • Is SM even working??? Can they get to work already?
  • Deepfake is serious, yet big companies like SM and HYBE are so slow
  • All agencies should take strong measures against this.
  • Let’s go with zero tolerance, whether they are minors or adults. Please catch the culprits
