Is Attending Kanye West’s Concert a Crime? NewJeans Faces Unwarranted Criticism

On August 24th, posts criticizing NewJeans for attending Kanye West’s concert began appearing on various online communities. It was reported that NewJeans members Minji, Hanni and Danielle attended the concert, while the underage members, Hyein and Haerin, did not.

The posts expressed disappointment, with comments like “I liked NewJeans, but why did they go to Kanye’s listening party?“, “It’s hard to believe they don’t know about his controversies” and “He’s done everything from racism to praising Hitler.” Critics argue that supporting an artist with such a controversial past is problematic.

Some even listed other stars who attended Kanye West’s concert, including aespa’s Winter and Giselle and Red Velvet’s Seulgi, and directed criticism towards them as well.

On the other hand, some netizens defended the artists, commenting, “Maybe they just went because he’s a famous singer“, “The company probably sent them“, “We should separate the controversies from his musical talent” and “They were probably invited.”

Kanye West has faced multiple controversies in the past, including releasing the song “Famous” in 2016, which featured lyrics that were seen as sexually harassing pop singer Taylor Swift. He also sparked backlash last year when he participated in a “Nyotaimori” event, where sushi was served on the body of a naked woman.

Meanwhile, Kanye West held the “Ye x Ty Dolla Sign Vultures Listening Experience” listening party on August 23rd at Goyang Stadium in Gyeonggi Province.
