Recently, the official YouTube channel of the girl group NewJeans uploaded Hanni’s cover of “Dive” by Olivia Dean.
Hanni said, “I was debating between two songs. I kept going back and forth between the two and couldn’t make up my mind. So I asked the other members. I asked them which of the two songs they’d like to hear more at the moment. They already knew both songs since I listen to them a lot. And I chose this one because it’s the one they all thought would be better”, explaining the reason she did a cover of this song.
Hanni continued, “When I first heard this song, it reminded me a lot of what I listened to when I was young. Songs with bright and upbeat vocals and jazzy, indie vibes…it felt really nice when I heard this song”, adding “And I also really like her vocals. I think her vocals are so easy to listen to but they are really strong. The melody line is really nice and I also like the instrumental”.
Revealing that she heard the acoustic version of the song first, Hanni shared, “I had no idea it was such an upbeat song. The acoustic version is very mellow. It’s like a song you’d hear at a jazz bar. But when I heard the original version I was like ‘Ooh!’, and thought ‘What a pleasant surprise!’. The music video is really cute, too. It’s quite simple compared to other music videos nowadays. It’s her just walking in an alleyway. I found it really cute”.
Before singing, Hanni also revealed her relationship with Olivia Dean. She said, “Olivia Dean came to the Gucci show. I wanted to say hi then but I couldn’t. I was way too shy so I couldn’t go up to her. She was also sitting on the opposite side so I felt bad about not saying hi. But instead, today, I’ll be singing an Olivia Dean song”.
“The vocals have a feel that you don’t really hear much in NewJeans’ music”, Hanni said then professionally changed her expression to start singing. Hani’s sweet and clear voice combined with the romantic lyrics made viewers fall in love with her at any moment.
Hani’s cover video drew attention and rose high on YouTube music chart. The original artist Olivia Dean also left a comment on Hanni’s cover video, saying “I wish you would have said hi at the show! Love this so much”.
Meanwhile, British singer Olivia Dean released the full album “Messy” with the song “Dive” last year and recently performed on the stage of the largest US music festival Coachella. With her rising popularity in Korea, she held a showcase in Korea on August 13th and met Korean fans. At the event, she also greeted TWICE’s Jihyo, Kwon Jin-ah, Lee Jin-ah and Hye-yoon.
