“Newsroom” Apologized For Reporting False Information About BTS’s Suga

At the end of JTBC’s “Newsroom” broadcast on August 16th mentioned their recent report about BTS member Suga’s drunk driving incident.

“Newsroom” stated, “We reported the drunk driving incident of BTS member Suga on August 7th. At that time, the news revealed a CCTV footage of a man riding an electric scooter on the road, however, the police investigation later confirmed that the man in the footage was not Suga. We apologize for causing confusion”.

Earlier on the 7th, “Newsroom” released a CCTV video, claiming that it was recorded when Suga rode his electric scooter while drunk in Yongsan-gu, Seoul. After it was confirmed that the person in the video was not Suga, “Newsroom” immediately deleted the CCTV scene on portal sites and official channels on the 14th. The CCTV part has been replaced with a video of a general video of the road unrelated to the incident.

A day later, on the 15th, “Newsroom” made an apology, saying “After investigation, the police confirmed that the scooter rider in the video was not Suga”.

In fact, “Newsroom” has made incorrect reports about BTS several times before. In December 2019, they reported that BTS members were considering taking legal action against Big Hit Music over profit distribution issues. However, the information was not true and they had to apologize. In June this year, they also faced criticism for translating the remarks of a Japanese fan while covering NewJeans’ solo fanmeeting at Tokyo Dome to “BTS fans have moved to NewJeans fandom.”

Meanwhile, Suga, who is currently doing military service as a social service worker, was recently caught riding an electric scooter under the influence of alcohol. According to the breathalyzer test conducted by the police, his blood alcohol concentration was 0.227%, the level of a license revocation.
