About “The Rose of Versailles”

The Rose of Versailles

Affectionately known as “Berubara,” “The Rose of Versailles” is a long historical manga by Riyoko Ikeda that was serialized from April 1972 to December 1973 in Shueisha’s “Weekly Margaret” (now “Margaret”). The series vividly depicts the struggles, joys, love, and death of people living during the French Revolution. It overturned the conventional belief that historical stories wouldn’t succeed in girls’ manga, gaining enthusiastic support from young female readers as the serialization progressed.

After the manga’s conclusion, it was adapted into a Takarazuka Revue performance in 1974, becoming a massive hit and sparking a “Berubara” boom. The work, praised for its accurate depiction of historical events, even inspired the saying, “If you want to study the French Revolution, read ‘The Rose of Versailles.'” It also played a pioneering role in the genre of historical manga. The TV anime adaptation aired from 1979, expanding the fan base and gaining popularity overseas.
