KBS, Are You Watching? Ha Yeon-soo’s “Patriotic Actions” After Her Japanese Debut + NHK Addresses the “Massacre of Innocent Koreans”

On August 15th, Ha Yeon-soo posted a commemorative message on her Instagram in honor of Korea’s Liberation Day. She wrote, “Commemorating the 79th year of Korea’s liberation and the establishment of the Korean government. I’m happy to be in Korea.

Along with this message, she shared a photo highlighting her radiant beauty, with Taegeukgi (the Korean flag) waving in the background.

This patriotic act by Ha Yeon-soo stands out even more in light of recent controversy surrounding KBS, Korea’s public broadcaster. On Liberation Day, KBS sparked public outrage by broadcasting Japan’s national anthem “Kimigayo” and showcasing traditional Japanese attire “kimono”. Ha Yeon-soo’s patriotic actions are shining even brighter in contrast.

Moreover, Ha Yeon-soo made her official Japanese debut with a surprising casting in NHK’s drama “The Tiger and Her Wings”. The drama first aired on April 1st and has now reached its 99th episode.

In the drama, Ha Yeon-soo plays the role of Choi Hyang-suk, a Korean student who travels to Japan to become a lawyer.

Notably, the drama garnered significant attention last month during its 87th episode, which directly addressed the massacre of Koreans during the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake. This portrayal is particularly noteworthy given Japan’s tendency to distort and conceal its historical past. NHK’s unusual move has elicited a strong response from Japanese viewers, especially since the episode conveyed the message that “innocent Koreans were massacred due to the false rumor that they were inciting a rebellion“.
