“BTS’s Suga Slept During Mandatory Service Training,” Witness Reported

Controversy continues to swirl around BTS member Suga following his drunk driving incident. Following complaints requesting an investigation into Suga’s neglect of duties during his alternative military service, additional reports have surfaced, prompting more complaints.

The allegations of Suga’s improper attitude during his public service training first appeared on the “Public Service Human” app, which deals with social service matters.

Here, a public service worker recounted their experience serving with Suga during basic training in November of last year. They claimed that Suga, who was the leader of a small group, failed to properly participate in the classes.

The public service worker stated, “Suga did not attend class (training) for the entire five days. The instructor, feeling it was too much, gave him a warning. Suga would wake up, nod without knowing what was going on, check his phone, and then go back to sleep.”

The worker also noted that Suga’s behavior led to the group’s participation rate being the lowest, likening him to a “half-hearted bully trying to look cool at the beginning of the school term.”

Suga attended the 35th basic training course in 2023, along with fellow public service worker Dawn, at the Social Service Training Center in Boeun County, North Chungcheong Province. Witnesses from that course reported seeing Suga as the group leader and mentioned that, unlike Dawn, Suga did not give out autographs. The training took place from November 20 to 24, 2023, according to the center.

The position of group leader is usually filled by a volunteer, approved by the group members. The role is similar to that of a squad leader in active duty. Successful completion of the group leader duties can lead to receiving a commendation and, occasionally, special leave. However, it is not confirmed whether Suga received such a commendation.

Allegations of Suga’s neglect of duty began spreading online late last year, beyond the app where they first appeared. Following the complaint regarding his drunk driving incident, additional complaints have been filed.

One of these complaints argued, “Suga’s drunk driving resulted from an improper work attitude, and the Military Manpower Administration should investigate his actual service conditions by checking CCTV footage from the service institution.”

The complainant also urged a thorough investigation into the “service management conditions” of Suga’s service institution and demanded strict action, including prosecution, if any illegalities are found.

This additional complaint has been assigned to the Seoul Regional Military Manpower Administration, where investigations are expected to continue. The previously filed complaint regarding Suga’s neglect of duty has also been assigned to the same office, and an investigation has reportedly begun.
