G-Dragon Finds New Path to Maintain Fame

G-Dragon has recently launched the JusPeace Charity Foundation to support young artists in overcoming drug addiction. Earlier, in June 2024, the idol participated in the Innovate Korea forum at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), where he was appointed as a guest lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Earlier this year, the BIGBANG leader also made an appearance at CES 2024, the world’s largest trade show for e-commerce, consumer, and information technology, held in Las Vegas. The exhibition showcased the latest advancements in artificial intelligence technology.

Music critic Lim Hee Yun believes that G-Dragon is trying to maintain his popularity by pioneering new paths and becoming a cultural icon.

“G-Dragon is now considered an artist past his prime. For today’s younger generation, he’s already categorized as an ‘uncle.’ Although BIGBANG was once regarded as a K-pop icon, they didn’t achieve the global success like BTS. Perhaps he wants to maintain his reputation and status as a cultural icon by challenging himself in new fields,” he said.

An entertainment industry official agrees that G-Dragon has always been open to new projects and experiments.

“G-Dragon has always stood out from other artists. His creativity in music, fashion, and art has set him apart, making him a multifaceted cultural icon. G-Dragon’s recent moves are likely his own decisions, as an artist of his stature usually has a stronger voice within his management company regarding future activities,” the official shared.

However, the official pointed out that G-Dragon should not have publicly launched the JusPeace Foundation, as it may remind people of past drug use controversies. The BIGBANG leader previously faced allegations of marijuana use in 2011 but was not prosecuted. In October last year, G-Dragon was once again investigated by Incheon police for drug use, but no charges were brought due to a lack of solid evidence.

Cultural critic Bae Kuk Nam believes that the establishment of this foundation is significant, even if it aims to restore G-Dragon’s tarnished image due to the drug incident.

“Of course, some may see G-Dragon’s recent activities as an effort to improve his image after the past marijuana incident. But I view positively G-Dragon’s use of his influence and global fame to make a positive impact on society,” Bae Kuk Nam expressed.

G-Dragon is recognized as one of the most successful trendsetters in K-pop history. He became the first K-pop idol to hold a solo art exhibition at the Seoul Museum of Art in 2015 and participated in a special auction with Sotheby’s in 2019. The BIGBANG leader has also been a global ambassador for the French luxury brand Chanel since 2016.
