Somi’s MV Released with Park Seo-joon’s Cameo, Did it Really Copy BLACKPINK?

Park Seo-joon makes a cameo appearance in Jeon Somi's new music video, which was accused of copying Blackpink.

On August 2 (KST), Somi officially released her English single “Ice Cream.” This marks her return after a year since her E.P. “Game Plan” under THE BLACK LABEL. From the moment the first teasers for “Ice Cream” were released, Somi faced various debates and mixed opinions.

“Ice Cream” is a vibrant dance track. The fast-paced beat with strong bass highlights the sweet and fresh melody, promising to be Somi’s summer hit. The song fits well with her musical style, allowing Somi to showcase her captivating performance skills.

The MV for “Ice Cream” features an ice cream truck with bright, summery colors. Somi transforms into a sizzling character, flaunting sharp visuals like a living doll. Notably, Somi “goes big” by inviting heartthrob Park Seo-joon to appear in the MV. In just about 10 seconds of screen time, Park Seo-joon caused a sensation with his prince-like handsomeness. His “cameo” left viewers pleasantly surprised.

However, since the teaser was released, Somi’s MV has been accused of copying BLACKPINK. From the summer concept to the tropical elements, Somi’s MV seems like a “duplicate” of “Ice Cream” – the 2020 summer collaboration between BLACKPINK and Selena Gomez. Additionally, the song titles are identical.

The fact that both artists are associated with YG and have overlapping product ideas has sparked fan backlash. When Somi’s final MV was released, the plagiarism allegations intensified due to numerous similar details. The main difference, however, lies in the guest appearances of Park Seo-joon and Selena Gomez.
