“Revolver” Director “Ji Chang-wook, Perfect in Every Way + A Presence Beyond the Script”

Director Oh Seung-wook shared behind-the-scenes story of casting Lim Ji-yeon and Ji Chang-wook for "Revolver"

On August 1st, an interview was held with Director Oh Seung-wook at a café in Samcheong-dong, Seoul, discussing his movie “Revolver”.

“Revolver” tells the story of Soo-young (played by Jeon Do-yeon), a former police officer who was imprisoned for crimes she didn’t commit. After her release, she single-mindedly pursues a single goal.

When asked about casting Lim Ji-yeon for the role of Jung Yoon-sun, Oh Seung-wook shared, “I watched ‘The Glory’ and saw the power she had. I also liked her performance in ‘Obsessed’.

He continued “I had a desire to show a side of Lim Ji-yeon that people hadn’t seen in ‘Obsessed’ or ‘The Glory’. When I met her, I told her that Jung Yoon-sun was like Robin. They’re not in a master-servant relationship but an equal partnership“, explaining why he compared the relationship between Jung Yoon-sun and Ha Soo-young to that of Batman and Robin.

The director added, “I trusted Lim Ji-yeon because she’s a talented actress. I wanted her to really shine. On the first day of filming, as she stepped out of the car, the wind blew perfectly, making her hair fly—everything was just right.

Regarding Ji Chang-wook’s role as Andy, Oh Seung-wook said, “Andy might be formidable and professional in Gangnam’s bars or conference rooms, but after losing power and money, he becomes almost invisible.

He explained, “As he tries to regain something, he gets trapped in his own mistakes, sinking further down as he gets beaten by Ha Soo-young. With no money, he ends up hiring amateur gangsters on credit.”

Oh Seung-wook praised Ji Chang-wook’s performance, “Ji Chang-wook brought so much to the role that his presence exceeded what was originally in the script. The small details in the scene where he arrives in a wheelchair in the mountains were fantastic.

He also mentioned how well he got along with Ji Chang-wook, joking, “Everything Ji Chang-wook did from start to finish was so good that I felt like I could carry him on my back all the way from here to the coast of Sokcho.

Although the role of Andy was not initially written with Ji Chang-wook in mind, the director acknowledged that Ji Chang-wook’s portrayal greatly enhanced the character’s presence, which in turn, elevated the performances of the other actors.

“Revolver” is set to be released on August 7th.
