K-netizens Call BBC “R*cist” over Slander Article about SEVENTEEN

A controversial article from BBC that demeans boy group SEVENTEEN is being criticized as “r*cist” by K-netizens.

Previously on July 11, BBC News published an article titled “Will K-pop’s AI experiment pay off?”, which wrongly accused boy group SEVENTEEN of using AI in their lyrics and music creation.

Since then, SEVENTEEN’s agency has dismissed such a claim, while SEVENTEEN member and composer Woozi himself refuted the article via an Instagram story, insisting that all of the group’s music is “written and composed by human creators”.

In response, however, the writer of such an article did not apologize, and instead went into hiding after editing the article, this time wrongly accusing SEVENTEEN of using AI in their “Maestro” MV.

As the author previously also made negative remarks about other K-pop artists, K-netizens begin to suspect that BBC’s article may be a way of spreading “r*cist” perceptions. So far, comments accusing BBC of r*cism has been appearing all over the net, especially under related topics on Korean online forums.

Below are some comments from netizens:

  • The overall tone of the article feels like it’s criticizing K-pop itself. The author is so obviously r*cist
  • As expected, BBC is just a shithole of r*cism.
  • R*cism is a big deal. There are a lot of people who are upset because K-pop is so successful.
  • The level of r*cist tone in that article is astonishing
  • The r*cist author must be mad that a K-pop artist went to Glastonbury and got a good response
