Kim Junsu: ‘Unchallenged TVXQ Faced Crisis with Big Bang’s Free-Style Dancing’

Singer Kim Junsu revealed that he was conscious of Big Bang during his time with TVXQ.

On the 7th, a video titled “Second Generation Idol Summit” was released on the YouTube channel ‘Jipdaeseong.’ In the video, Kim Junsu appeared as a guest and had various conversations with Daesung.

Kim Junsu expressed his delight, saying, “This is the first time we’ve met on a broadcast since ‘Family Outing.’ The last time we met personally was when you came to see the musical ‘Dorian Gray,’ which was 6-7 years ago.”

Regarding his first impression of Daesung, Kim Junsu said, “I remember seeing the Big Bang members when TVXQ debuted. Fans and the public thought, ‘He must be really good at singing,’ when they saw me because my members were so handsome that I was assumed to be the main vocalist. Then, Big Bang debuted, and seeing Daesung, I thought, ‘He must be really good at singing and will dominate Korea.’ I felt a connection with him because we had similar roles.”

He continued, “Even when I was tired, I would go out to watch Big Bang rehearse. They had a strong appeal that we didn’t have, and it was very helpful to see.” Daesung added, “When TVXQ debuted, we were still auditioning at YG. We were training for about three years, so we were just starting to adjust to YG and didn’t have any spare time.”

Kim Junsu further mentioned, “In 2006, we won the grand slam with ‘O-正.反.合.’ (O-Jung.Ban.Hap.). We received the grand prize at every award ceremony that year. After that, we thought there were no rivals in Korea, so we focused on Japan. While we were busy with schedules and regional performances in Japan, Big Bang’s ‘Lies’ came out and became a hit. Until then, neither the members nor the company felt any tension. But after seeing ‘Lies,’ even our members thought it was so cool. That was the first time we and the company felt a sense of crisis. Trends seemed to change with Big Bang, and that was also when music shifted from albums to digital releases. Our style was always precise choreography, but seeing them dance so freely was shocking. But we couldn’t quite match that,” he said, bringing laughter.

He added, “At that time, we were deeply focused on Japan, but we realized we couldn’t delay any longer. While we were doing well in Japan, it felt like we were losing our dominance in Korea. That was the first time we felt that we had to surpass Big Bang. The choreography for the part ‘With one kiss, a sharp and strong attraction’ in ‘Mirotic’ was created by me, and I think I subconsciously felt Big Bang’s influence.”
