Chun Woo-hee Talks About Getting Cast In “The 8 Show” To Replace IU, “Worried That The Character Would Be Hated”

Actress Chun Woo-hee revealed her efforts to portray the 8th Floor in Netflix’s original series “The 8 Show”

On May 23rd, actress Chun Woo-hee met with Tenasia at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul and talked about the difficulties she faced while creating her character in Netflix’s series “The 8 Show”.

“The 8 Show” depicts the story of 8 people in a secret space divided into 8 floors participating in a sweet but dangerous show to earn money as they accumulate time. The drama is an adaptation of the webtoons “Money Game” and “Pie Game”.

In this series, Chun Woo-hee plays the role of 8th Floor, a free-spirited person who is unpredictable. The 8th floor is the highest floor in the building and the highest class where the player receives 340,000 won per minute and 20.4 million won per hour.

In the beginning, IU (Lee Ji-eun) was cast to play the 8th Floor, not Chun Woo-hee. However, IU withdrew from the project due to her schedule so Chun Woo-hee joined and took over the role. She explained, “I was very worried about this character. I hope people won’t hate her too much but I know this is not a character that can draw empathy”, adding “To make it simple, she’s a person who doesn’t need a narrative. This character does not show relationships between people or emotions and feelings.”

Regarding 8th Floor, the actress shared, “She’s a person who understands the intentions of the organizer the best”, adding “The organizer wants to get stimuli that arise from betrayals and conflicts. I think 8th Floor just instinctively sees through the intention. This character would be so annoying if she had any intentions but she participates in the show only for pleasure and enjoyment.”

After receiving the script, Chun Woo-hee thought about untying her hair and enjoying the game properly. She said, “I want to express my character without disrupting the overall storyline. This project had more restrictions because 8 people shared one space so I needed to change my expressions a lot. Therefore, I believed that it might be better to abandon my plans and just act on intuition and instinct. I tried to maintain the balance within the restrictions”.

When asked about the difficulties during the filming, Chun Woo-hee replied, “It was not easy to have fun while watching someone suffer. I also realized that I’m not a strong person. I acted with the determination to put all my mind and heart in the character”.

At the same time as “The 8 Show” release, JTBC’s “The Atypical Family” starring Chun Woo-hee also started broadcasting. In this regard, the actress said, “There have been many times when two release schedules overlapped. However, I think it’s fun to watch both at the same time because I can show viewers different genres and different aspects of my acting”, adding that she lost a lot of weight after filming “The Atypical Family” to transform into 8th Floor in “The 8 Show”.

Praised at “Emma Stone of Korea” by director Han Jae-rim, Chun Woo-hee confessed her gratitude, saying “Since the director said that, I think I should work harder”.
