Byun Woo-seok Recalls His Unknown Days, “I Was Eliminated In The Middle Of Script Reading”

Actor Byun Woo-seok talked about the bad treatment he received when he was an unknown actor and showed his positive mindset

Episode 245 of tvN’s “You Quiz on the Block”, which aired on May 22nd, featured the guest appearance of actor Byun Woo-seok, who is greatly loved for his role as Ryu Seon-jae in tvN’s drama “Lovely Runner”.

Byun Woo-seok made his debut in tvN’s drama “Dear My Friends” and thought he would do well after that. However, the actor confessed, “I used to be eliminated during the script reading period”.

He continued, “It was a series of traumas. There were times when I got cursed at and my self-esteem hit the lowest point. Since I was a model, I loved being photographed and filmed. However, I also developed camera anxiety due to such an environment. I thought, ‘Is this the right thing for me to do?’ and was worried about my career. When I joined auditions, I heard many sharp comments such as ‘I don’t think you’ll be able to make it in 4-5 years’”.

The actor added, “Whenever I heard such comments, I thought about working harder to overcome it. I didn’t want to be discouraged. It was my choice so I wanted to do it until the end.”

Telling a heartbreaking story of when he was an unknown actor, Byun Woo-seok said, “I went to a hair salon after the script reading to get a haircut for my character. However, when they were cutting half of my hair, I received a call, and someone from the production team told me, ‘We’re sorry but we can’t work with you this time’”, adding “After having a company dinner, there’s always a group chat for actors. In the group chat, I left a message, saying ‘I don’t think I can work with you guys. See you next time’, and felt so upset. To be honest, it hurt my pride. I wondered, ‘Am I not good enough?’ and cried a lot.”

However, Byun Woo-seok shared, “Because of that moment, I wanted to act better and became a person who could work harder”, showing his positive mindset. He added, “The same situation may occur again. To prevent it from happening, I took on all kinds of roles, from small characters to characters with only 1-2 lines. I really did all kinds of projects. The peak was when I filmed 10 projects within a year. It was the toughest time but it made me stronger”.
