Kim Se-jeong, now acclaimed for her performance in MBC’s historical drama Moon River, has become one of South Korea’s most versatile entertainers. Known for her ability to bring complex characters to life, she has successfully transitioned from K-pop idol to award-winning actress.

An Unexpected Start to Stardom
Kim Se-jeong’s journey began unexpectedly in 2013 when she mistakenly attended a Jellyfish Entertainment audition instead of the FNC audition she had planned to go to. Competing against 3,000 applicants, she was accepted, marking the beginning of her career. Reflecting on the experience, Kim said she admired the company’s talented artists and felt fortunate about the chance she had stumbled upon.
Kim Se-jeong’s big break came in 2016 through Mnet’s Produce 101. Her strong vocals, engaging personality, and charm quickly won public attention. Finishing second in the final, she debuted as a member of the project girl group I.O.I, gaining center-stage recognition and establishing herself in the competitive K-pop industry.
A Childhood of Resilience
Despite her polished public image, Kim Se-jeong’s childhood was far from easy. Following her parents’ divorce, she grew up in a relative’s home with her older brother. Living on a government welfare card providing just 3,500 won per day for food, she faced extreme financial hardship. At school, she often struggled with loneliness and misunderstandings from teachers and peers, yet she always maintained a bright smile.
Her love for singing became her anchor. Even as a child, she auditioned at more than 20 agencies, determined to become a singer. She practiced rigorously, honing both her vocal skills and dance, and her perseverance eventually led her to success.
Acting Career and Recognition
Kim Se-jeong made her acting debut in 2017 with KBS’s School 2017, earning praise for her portrayal of Ra Eun-ho. Despite it being her first lead role, her prior experience in theater and acting academies allowed her to deliver a polished and natural performance, earning her the KBS Drama Awards’ Popularity and Best New Actress awards, as well as a Baeksang Arts Awards nomination.
She further proved her acting range with The Uncanny Counter, portraying Do Ha-na, a character who balanced cheerfulness with emotional restraint. Her performance in action sequences, particularly the elevator fight scene, became a standout moment, showing both her physical skill and emotional depth.

Global Stardom with Business Proposal
In 2022, Kim Se-jeong starred in SBS’s Business Proposal, playing dual roles that required precise comedy, romance, and emotional acting. The drama’s ratings climbed to a peak of 11.6%, and it ranked highly on Netflix’s global charts. Her ability to deliver nuanced performances, combined with her charisma, solidified her as a global star and earned her the affectionate title of “Korea’s Emma Stone.”
From an accidental audition to I.O.I debut and acclaimed acting, Kim Se-jeong exemplifies resilience, versatility, and talent. Her journey shows that even amidst personal hardships, determination and passion can transform challenges into extraordinary success.
