According to Newsis on July 8th, the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency announced, “The Anti-Corruption and Economic Crime Investigation Unit sent police officer A from the Incheon Police Agency and investigator B from the Incheon District Prosecutor’s Office to the prosecution on June 27th on charges of leaking official secrets and violating the Personal Information Protection Act.”
They added, “Four journalists who received personal information directly or indirectly have also been sent to the prosecution without detention on charges of violating the Personal Information Protection Act.”
Police officer A, who has been handed over to the prosecution, is accused of delivering a report containing the progress of the investigation into Lee Sun-kyun‘s drug case to journalists. A is known to work in a department unrelated to drug crime investigations.
The leaked report by A is said to have been written by the Incheon Police Agency’s Drug Crime Investigation Unit on October 18th last year, containing the personal details such as names, criminal records, identities and occupations of those involved in Lee Sun-kyun’s drug case.
Three journalists are identified as having directly or indirectly obtained the report or confirmed its contents through A.
Investigator B from the Incheon District Prosecutor’s Office is accused of informing a local daily newspaper journalist in the Gyeonggi area by phone that Lee Sun-kyun was under police investigation. Accordingly, the media outlet reported exclusively on October 19th last year, “Internal investigation into drug charges is underway.“
Meanwhile, Lee Sun-kyun was investigated by the police in October last year on charges of drug use. After being summoned three times for investigation, he was found dead in Waryong Park, Jongno-gu, Seoul on December 27th last year.
