5 abnormal K-drama love stories: From vampire, webtoon character to 9-tailed fox

Korean dramas really know how to romanticize otherworldly characters and unusual romances like these.

Korean dramas always explore a variety of narratives and know how to please the viewers with love stories that are both beautiful and heartbreaking. Fantasy characters like goblins and foxes get “beautified” and appear on the screen in a beautiful way.  Sometimes those romantic details accidentally make the viewers forget the irregularity in the romances established in Korean dramas..

1. Scholar Who Walks The Night

Released in 2015, Scholar Who Walks The Night is a historical drama that gathers actors with appealing visuals such as Lee Jun Ki, Lee Yoo Bi, Lee Soo Hyuk, Kim So-eun, Chang-min. Set in the Joseon era, when humans live with vampires, the story revolves around Kim Sung Yul (Lee Jun Ki) – a vampire who hides in human form. He meets Yang Sun (Lee Yoo Bi) – a girl pretending to be a man and that’s when the love story between humans and vampires begin to blossom in a dark age, when they have to fight the evil vampire Gwi (Lee Soo Hyuk).

2. W – Two Worlds

W – Two Worlds revolves around the story of a couple who live in Seoul but belong to two different worlds. Female doctor from the real world Oh Yeon Joo (Han Hyo Joo) is the daughter of webtoon artist Oh Sung Moo (Kim Eui Sung) – the best-selling author of “W” with Kang Chul (Lee Jong Suk) as the protagonist. While searching for her missing father, Yeon Joo is accidentally dragged into the world of Kang Chul. From there, feelings arose between two people in two different worlds, one from the real world and the other from a comic world.

3. Tale Of The Nine-Tailed

Tale Of The Nine-Tailed is a journey that follows Lee Yeon (Lee Dong Wook) – the mountain god who has spent thousands of years searching for the girl he loves. With a mysterious and fanciful charm, the film quickly attracted a large audience who loved the love story of gumihos and humans.

4. The Legend Of The Blue Sea

True to its name, The Legend Of The Blue Sea has fairy content when building a story of a mermaid going ashore to find love. In the drama, Jun Ji Hyun plays the beautiful mermaid Shim Chung who leaves the sea to find her lover from her previous life Joon Jae (Lee Min Ho).

5. Goblin

Goblin, a 2016 masterpiece, is the story of 900-year-old goblin Kim Shin (Gong Yoo) who has been entangled in a thousand-year curse. The only way for him to be freed from that curse is to meet his bride – Eun Tak (Kim Go Eun). This is a love story that is both mystical and paradoxical about a goblin and his human bride.
