2023 MAMA Accused of Discriminating Between Male and Female Artists

As the 2023 MAMA concluded, mixed opinions have emerged regarding the awards’ different treatment of male and female artists

On November 28 and 29, the 2023 MAMA was held at Tokyo Dome in Japan, honoring the various artists with notable achievements within the year.

While this was supposed to be a joyous occasion, a lot of fans have complains, with some even accusing the awards ceremony of mistreating attending female artists when compared to male ones.

In particular, users on the sub-reddit Kpop thoughts pointed out various differences in treatment between female artists and male artists at the 2023 MAMA, as follows.

First, the number of female performers are severely lower than that of male performers, and there were only 9 stages with female artists across both nights, while this figure for male artists totaled to 16, which is almost double the former.

In addition, the time of performance also differs greatly between the two genders. Out of the many female artists, very few performed more than one song during their sets, while most male artists did at least two.

Furthermore, the average performance duration of female artists fell around 5 minutes, various boy groups performed more than 7 minutes, even if the female artist was more senior than the male ơn.

(G)I-DLE, for instance, performed only “Queencard” for 5 minutes, while RIIZE performed 2 songs in Day 2 and delivered a special collab in Day 1, totaling to over 8 minutes.

Meanwhile, LE SSERAFIM’s set lasted for less than 5 minutes, while that of TREASURE was over 7 minutes.

Of course, it’s not that male artists should perform less, but that there should be a balance between the two, fans claimed, adding that female artists should boycott MAMA next year if this trend continues.

However, while this opinion received a lot of agreement, some argued that the differences in performing time and the number of female and male artists may not depend on MAMA, but on the artist themselves.
