2023 Korea’s Entertainment Industry Issues: No.3 BTS, No.2 KBS, and No.1 Goes To…

Data consulting company PIMAI conducted a survey targeting 3000 individuals aged 20 to 69 nationwide, asking about the top issues of Korea’s entertainment industry in 2023.

The survey revealed that ‘Celebrity Drug Case’ secured the first place with 31.3% of the votes, as announced on December 28th.

Following the drug controversy involving Yoo Ah-in earlier this year, allegations of drug use by Lee Sun-kyun and G-Dragon surfaced in October, becoming a serious social issue in Korea. Lee Sun-kyun, who was under police investigation, was found dead on December 27th. Subsequently, it was reported that his wife, actress Jeon Hye-jin, is maintaining a vigil.

The 2nd place went to ‘KBS’s Greatest Crisis’ (14.0%). KBS faced its biggest crisis in 50 years due to the predicted financial decline from the separation of broadcasting fees collection and subsequent challenges such as lax management and loss of content competitiveness.

The 3rd and 4th places were occupied by ‘BTS Military Enlistment’ (11.0%) and ‘Physical 100 K-Content Power’ (8.5%) respectively.

The 5th place was taken by a contractual dispute arising from conflicts between FIFTY FIFTY and their agency (8.3%).

News of the slump in Korean movies ranked 6th (8.1%), followed by the power struggle for SM Entertainment’s management rights at 7th (6.4%). News of successful Japanese animations like ‘The First Slam Dunk’ and ‘Suzume,’ amidst the continued decline of Korean movies, took the 8th place (4.8%).

There were also unfortunate news of deaths, with Yoon Jung-hee, Hyun Mi, Byun Hee-bong, and Seo Se-won’s deaths ranking 9th (4.7%). News of celebrity couples’ divorces secured the 10th place (3.0%).
