yuri snsd brother burning sun scandal

In the glamorous world of K-pop, Yuri of Girls’ Generation has long been known as the “Black Pearl” admired for her talent, dedication, and clean public image. However, few expected that the most shocking controversy tied to her name would stem from her own brother.

The infamous Burning Sun scandal not only toppled top stars like Seungri and Jung Joon Young, but also exposed the disturbing actions of Kwon Hyuk Jun Yuri’s older brother turning him into a central figure of public outrage.

In 2024, the BBC documentary “Burning Sun – Exposing The Secret K-pop Chat Groups” reignited public anger, revealing chilling new details about the crimes committed by Kwon Hyuk Jun and his associates, including Jung Joon Young and Choi Jong Hoon. According to investigative journalist Kang Kyung Yoon, Kwon Hyuk Jun was not merely a passive participant but an active member within the group.

The crimes were described as systematic and deeply disturbing. At a ski resort, Kwon Hyuk Jun and his accomplices allegedly conspired to target young women. Even more horrifying, illicit footage of assaults was secretly recorded and shared openly within chat groups, treated as entertainment. These revelations highlighted an extreme level of disregard for women’s dignity.

When the scandal first came to light, Kwon Hyuk Jun initially denied wrongdoing, claiming he had only been involved in group chats for business purposes. However, as evidence mounted, he issued a public apology, admitting fault and expressing remorse for the irreversible harm caused to victims. Despite his words, many believed the apology was a calculated move to reduce backlash and mitigate his sentence, with some accusing him of leveraging his sister’s fame to gain sympathy.

Public anger intensified further over what many saw as a lenient sentence. Prosecutors initially sought a 10-year prison term the harshest among those involved but the final ruling reduced his sentence to just four years.

Adding fuel to the outrage was his attempt to “start over” by legally changing his name to Kwon Yeon Oh during the investigation in 2019. Critics viewed this as a deliberate effort to erase his past and avoid public recognition after release. After serving his sentence, he was freed in 2024.

The combination of a relatively short sentence and his name change sparked fierce criticism both in South Korea and internationally. Many argued that the punishment did not match the severity of the crimes, raising concerns about accountability and the possibility of reintegration without consequences.

Ironically, before the scandal, Kwon Hyuk Jun had appeared on the show I Can See Your Voice, where he was perceived as kind and genuine. He introduced himself as an office worker with dreams of becoming a singer – an image that sharply contrasted with the crimes later revealed.

The case not only shocked the public but also cast a shadow over Yuri’s reputation. Although she had no involvement, the situation placed her under immense scrutiny and pressure.

Amid the backlash, many expressed sympathy for Yuri, acknowledging the unfair burden placed on her. At the same time, the public has largely maintained a clear distinction between her and her brother’s actions, while strongly condemning crimes involving exploitation and violence against women as utterly unacceptable.
