On June 27, the YouTube channel “Humanities of the Mind” uploaded a video titled “The Day of the IMF Crisis (Yoo Ah-in Eating Wild Ginseng) – Yoo Ah-in & Do-ol Kim Yong-ok.”
The video reunited Yoo Ah-in and Do-ol Kim Yong-ok, who previously worked together on the 2019 KBS1 program Do-ol Ah-in Going All Directions. During the relaxed meal, the two reflected on conversations they had not been able to share over the years.
When asked about cooking while watching Kim Yong-ok prepare food, Yoo Ah-in revealed that spending a long time by himself had helped him develop the skill. “I’ve spent quite a lot of time alone, so I cook a little now.”
During their conversation, Kim Yong-ok praised Yoo Ah-in’s performances in the acclaimed films Default and Burning, complimenting the actor’s ability to convey complex emotions on screen.
Yoo Ah-in then reflected on his role in Default, which tells the story of South Korea’s 1997 IMF financial crisis. “The film Default is about the 1997 IMF crisis, and I was only 15 years old at the time. I didn’t even fully understand the concept of money.”

He explained that one of his motivations for taking the role was to help younger audiences better understand a significant historical event that many of his generation did not personally experience. “I thought it could help younger viewers of my generation, who didn’t really know much about that period, better understand what happened.”
The actor also became a hot topic for his appearance in the video. Wearing a black beanie, Yoo Ah-in looked noticeably slimmer, with sharper facial features that quickly caught viewers’ attention. Many netizens commented on his appearance, writing:
- He’s still handsome.
- That black beanie suits him so well.
- He looks a bit thinner.

Yoo Ah-in was convicted of repeatedly using medical narcotics, including propofol, over approximately two and a half years beginning in September 2020. The actor ultimately received:
- One year in prison, suspended for two years
- A fine of ₩2 million (approximately $1,450 USD)
- Forfeiture of approximately ₩1.5 million (around $1,090 USD)
The first trial sentenced him to one year in prison and immediate detention. However, the appeals court reduced the sentence to a one-year prison term suspended for two years, resulting in his release. The decision was later upheld by South Korea’s Supreme Court.
His appearance alongside Do-ol Kim Yong-ok marks one of Yoo Ah-in’s first notable public activities since the legal proceedings concluded, prompting renewed discussion among fans about the actor’s future career.
