Yoo Ah-in Apologizes to Family, Colleagues & Fans as Prosecution Demands 4-Year Sentence

The prosecution has requested a 4-year prison sentence for actor Yoo Ah-in, who apologizes to family, colleagues, and fans.

On the 24th, the Seoul Central District Court’s Criminal Division 25-1 held the first trial of Yoo Ah-in and his acquaintance Choi Mo, who were charged with violating the Narcotics Control Act (illegal use of psychotropic substances).

On this day, the prosecution demanded 4 years in prison, a 2 million won fine (1,444 USD), and a surcharge of 1.54 million won (1,112 USD) for Yoo Ah-in.

Yoo Ah-in faces charges including violations of the Narcotics Control Act (illegal use of psychotropic substances), marijuana smoking and solicitation, evidence destruction, violation of the Medical Act, and fraud.

Choi, who is charged with violations of the Narcotics Control Act (marijuana), the Aggravated Punishment for Specific Crimes Act (retaliatory threats), and aiding and abetting a criminal, was also sentenced to four years in prison.

The prosecution cited the reasons for the sentencing: “The defendant, a famous celebrity, habitually obtained illegal medical narcotics worth 500 million won (approx 361,000 USD) by deceiving doctors using his wealth and professional status, and administered them overseas using a closed personal network. As a renowned celebrity, not just an actor, who has made influential public statements on social issues, he bears significant social responsibility. However, the defendants used their social influence to cover up their crimes.”

They added,”The nature of their crimes is extremely heinous, as they used their social influence to silence people, facilitated the escape of acquaintances to overseas, and disregarded the Korean judicial system.”

In contrast, Yoo Ah-in’s defense attorney acknowledged the propofol injection charges but argued that it was for treating mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety disorders, and sleep disorders, based on professional medical judgment.

The attorney emphasized, “He has no prior record of similar offenses exceeding a fine,” and added, “He deeply regrets disappointing his supporters and colleagues who have worked with him and vows never to repeat such actions.”

Yoo Ah-in himself made a final statement. He said, “I deeply reflect and apologize for my mistakes related to this incident. I sincerely apologize to my family, colleagues, and fans who were hurt and affected by my wrongdoings. I am truly sorry,” and bowed his head.

He continued, “This incident allowed me to reflect on my entire life. I am determined to live as a more mature and responsible person. I want to thank those who guided me with stern discipline and affection. I apologize again to everyone disappointed by me, and to those hurt and affected by my actions. Regardless of the outcome, I will work to repay the support of those who cherish me and contribute more to society.”

Co-defendant Choi also said, “From the start of the investigation to the end of the trial, not a single day has passed without regret and reflection. Though I don’t know what punishment I will receive, I will accept it and strive to become a healthier person and contribute to society.”

Previously, Yoo Ah-in was indicted for habitually using medical propofol 181 times from September 2020 to March 2022, and illegally obtaining over 1,100 tablets of two types of sleeping pills 44 times under another person’s name from May 2021 to August 2022. He is also accused of smoking marijuana in the U.S. with Choi and three others in January 2023 and instructing others to smoke.

In previous trials, Yoo Ah-in admitted to some charges, including marijuana smoking and propofol use. However, he denied charges of instructing others to smoke marijuana, destroying evidence, aiding violations of the Narcotics Control Act, and fleeing overseas.

Earlier, the prosecution requested arrest warrants for Yoo Ah-in twice in May and September last year, but both were dismissed by the court. Consequently, Yoo Ah-in has been tried without detention.
