won bin 15year hiatus

Korean actor Won Bin may still boast heartthrob visuals, but his latest ad campaign has reignited a long-standing question: When is he returning to acting?

The 46-year-old star, known for his near-mythical presence in Korean entertainment, was recently unveiled as the exclusive model for a shabu-shabu brand. The brand proudly declared, “Won Bin, the national treasure actor loved by all of Korea, is finally with us!” They further claimed, “Is there anyone in Korea who doesn’t know Won Bin? ‘National treasure actor’ is the most fitting title.”

And yet, the phrase feels ironic.

The newly released photos show Won Bin in a sleek suit, looking effortlessly elegant. His ageless beauty is undeniable, but his prolonged absence from the screen makes the praise seem awkward. Won Bin’s last acting role was in the critically acclaimed 2010 film The Man from Nowhere ( 아저씨 ). Since then, despite numerous casting offers, he has not returned to acting.

These days, fans see him only through commercials. In 2025 alone, he has appeared in three brand campaigns, proving his continued influence in the advertising world. However, both the public and industry insiders have voiced disappointment at his prolonged inactivity. Acclaimed director Bong Joon Ho once commented, “Won Bin is an underrated actor. He really needs to do a film soon.”

Meanwhile, Won Bin’s wife, actress Lee Na Young, remains active in her career. In a 2023 interview for her series Park Ha Kyung’s Travelogue, she hinted at his potential return, saying, “He’s watching a lot and reading scripts. He’ll return eventually. Just wait a little longer.” But two years have passed since that hopeful note and still, no comeback.

In a time when Korean content is booming globally, Won Bin’s decision to stay solely in the commercial spotlight feels increasingly out of place. Many fans argue that the title of “national treasure actor” must be backed by action namely, a return to the screen.

Until then, all that remains are beautifully lit advertisements and growing impatience.
