Will DC films emerge as a new niche to fill the emptiness of Marvel, starting with “The Flash”?

Sorry Marvel! Now we have to watch DC movies!

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”, scheduled to be released this May, is an especially meaningful film as it is the last MCU film directed by director James Gunn, who directed the entire “Guardians of the Galaxy” series.

Guardians of the Galaxy

Looking at the sentiment and atmosphere of the trailer, at least “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3” is expected to keep the feeling of the previous movies well. Above all, it does not seem to cause a gap among fans in that it is the end of a franchise and it is a work in the form of a space opera that is not greatly connected to the Multiverse.

In particular, considering the directing style of James Gunn, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” is expected to contain action, humor, and drama. This can be seen from his previous DC film “The Suicide Squad” (2021).

Guardians of the Galaxy

Considering the fact that the villains are the main characters and the failure history of “Suicide Squad” (2016), James Gunn turned “The Suicide Squad” into the DC version of “Guardians of the Galaxy”, making it a cruel and violent but enjoyable film. In particular, James Gunn’s skills can be seen in that he has easily drawn storytelling based on each character’s individuality. From that point of view, the MCU losing James Gunn is a huge mistake.

Of course, from Marvel’s point of view, it would be unavoidable for James Gunn to leave due to the aftermath of his controversy (remarks on Twitter). However, as pointed out in “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” review, if we consider the problems of Marvel films that are currently occurring, if there is a storyteller with natural talent and planning skills like James Gunn, and he is in charge of the MCU, not DC, the situation will be completely different.

Marvel Cinematic Universe

Interestingly, James Gunn is now co-president of Warner Bros.’s DC studios, Marvel’s rival, and is in the process of revamping DC movies. If you look at the blueprint for DC movies, including the new “Superman: Legacy” movie he is currently planning, you can look forward to it. The dark vision of director Zack Snyder has been discarded and reorganized into works containing James Gunn’s unique humor and drama, raising anticipation.

Above all, DC plans to solve the problem of setting up the worldview that has been problematic so far and almost moving to the multiverse system through the upcoming film “The Flash”. The recently released trailer for “The Flash” shows how the existing Batman (Ben Affleck) and the past Batman (Michael Keaton) appear, as well as how to utilize new characters such as Supergirl. In “The Flash”, DC’s famous characters are mobilized to show as much attractions as possible and herald a new change in DC movies as a whole.

Above all, “The Flash” marks a new start for DC, so even audiences who have not watched previous DC films will still be able to watch the next DC films after watching “The Flash”.

The Flash

Looking at the direction of DC movies planned so far, there is no homework setting that requires viewers to study the complex multiverses like the current Marvel movies and series. DC films are planned to thoroughly pursue fun based on genre and bring out the unique charm of the characters.

Of course, the key is the box office performance of “The Flash”. However, if we consider the problems that are occurring in current Marvel works (conflicts due to PC problems, gaps due to linkage with OTT works, and loss of direction), DC movies will try to go a different way from Marvel by referring to this.

As James Gunn, who has been making films in the direction fans want so far, is in charge of directing DC, it is expected that DC films will emerge as a new niche to fill the emptiness of Marvel and even surpass it.
