“We thought they were TWICE”… A university was confused with girl groups’ names and invited another group instead

With offline university festivals being resumed for the first time after more than 3 years due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the competition to invite celebrities between universities is also getting more intense. Celebrities’ performances contribute a lot to the success of university festivals. The more famous invited celebrities are, the more exciting the festival’s atmosphere will be.

In this regard, netizens on online communities recently brought back the story of a university that made an absurd mistake in inviting celebrities for their festival. In 2016, a funny but sad incident happened to the freshman welcoming festival held by Pukyong National University in Busan as the school announced a lineup with the participation of a girl group but mistakenly invited a different group.

A post on online communities contained a screenshot photo believed to be an explanation from Pukyong National University’s Student Council.

Accordingly, the Student Council of Pukyong National University was looking for singers to decorate the stage of their freshman welcoming event, and the event agency introduced the girl group named 2EYES.

The Student Council’s president informed the members of the Student Council after completing the contracts with several singers, including 2EYES. However, the Student Council’s president was confused 2EYES (투아이즈) with TWICE (트와이스) because the spelling of their names are similar and wrote TWICE in their announcement.

Pukyong University made the notice on their Facebook community page. After causing confusion among students, the Student Council’s president had to apologize.

An official from the Student Council explained through a text message, saying “This happened because the Student Council’s president didn’t know much about celebrities”, adding, “The president wants to apologize for the mistake”. They continued, “We tried to change to another singer but it’s quite difficult since they ask for a large amount of cancellation fee.”

TWICE is a nine-member multinational girl group that debuted with the song “Like OOH-AHH” in 2015. 2EYES is a four-member girl group that debuted with “Don’t Mess With Me” in 2013. 2EYES has gained certain popularity but it is true that they were not comparable to TWICE in terms of public recognition.

The OP added, “In order to make up for the mistake, Pukyong National University’s Student Council later spent a month trying to contact JYP Entertainment (TWICE’s agency) at other universities’ festivals to invite TWICE to their festival. They even had to change their festival schedule to fit with TWICE’s schedule”.

Recalling this absurd incident, netizens commented, “2EYES must have been so happy and practiced hard for the event”, “I feel so sorry for the students”, etc.
