Fans worldwide were stunned after photos and videos surfaced online allegedly showing Tyler Chase (36) — a former child actor from Nickelodeon’s hit series Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide — living homeless on the streets of Los Angeles.

According to Bored Panda, a video posted to social media on September 24 (local time) showed a man identifying himself as “Tyler Chase” greeting the camera from inside a car. Additional images showed him sitting on the sidewalk alongside other unhoused individuals, dressed in worn-out clothes and appearing frail and aged beyond his years.

Chase rose to fame in the mid-2000s as Martin Qwerly, the chatty and quirky friend of the main character Ned in Nickelodeon’s beloved series. His eccentric charm helped drive the show’s lighthearted tone, earning him a loyal fanbase.

The shocking footage prompted a wave of sympathy online. One woman who shared the video also launched a GoFundMe campaign to help him, which reportedly raised about $1,200 (₩1.6 million).

However, according to Los40, the woman later received a message from someone claiming to be a family member of Chase, who warned that what he needs most is medical support, not money. “He can’t manage his medication or keep a phone for more than a few days,” the message allegedly read, adding that “money could actually harm him.” The sender emphasized, “He is a kind and pure soul but desperately needs treatment.”

Chase himself has previously posted videos on his YouTube channel discussing bipolar disorder, including titles like “Bipolar Vlogs – The Absence of Color” and “So Be It”. These videos reflected struggles with mental health, which now appear even more concerning in light of his current situation.

While many fans expressed heartbreak — writing comments like “I can’t believe this” and “This is so sad” — others criticized the way these videos and images are being circulated online. Critics argue that turning his hardship into content is exploitative, highlighting the ethical dilemmas of viral “poverty porn.”

Even Bored Panda noted that the situation raises questions about how online platforms consume and amplify such personal crises. Fans remain divided between wanting to help and worrying about the ethics of publicizing his private struggles.
