Song Hye Kyo
When it comes to Korean actresses with the surname “Song”, Song Hye Kyo is definitely a name that comes to mind, with fame extending way beyond Korea.
Song Hye Kyo made her small screen debut with a minor role in the 1996 drama “First Love”, and earned her breakthrough after appearing in the 2000 series “Autumn in My Heart”. After 27 years in the industry, the actress has now made a deep impression on audiences, with various noticeable works such as “All In”, “Full House”, “That Winter, the Wind Blows”, “Descendants of the Sun”, and most recently, “The Glory”.
With the role of Moon Dong Eun, a girl who was heavily bullied at school and abandoned at home, Song Hye Kyo delivered a complete transformation in her acting.
In fact, with her portrayal of Moon Dong Eun, Song Hye Kyo was crowned as Best Actress in a TV Drama at the 2023 Baeksang Awards. She is also nominated for the Best Actress Award at the Blue Dragon Television Awards.
After “The Glory”, Song Hye Kyo was supposed to star alongside actress Han So Hee in a project called “The Price of Confession”. Unfortunately, the work didn’t go through, and whilst the two actresses maintain a good relationship, many audiences are still disappointed.
Song Ji Hyo
As a fixed cast member of the internationally famous TV show “Running Man”, Song Ji Hyo has gained massive popularity throughout Asia.
However, “Running Man” isn’t the only source behind Song Ji Hyo’s fame. In particular, across her years of career, the actress has nailed noticeable works such as “Jumong”, “Gye Baek”, and “A Frozen Flower”, among others.
Unfortunately, Song Ji Hyo hasn’t played any lead role since the 2021 series “The Witch’s Diner”, and her latest drama appearance was a cameo in the 2022 series “Shooting Stars”. This is partly due to her conflict with her agency, Uzu Rocks.
Song Yoon Ah
Final on the list is Song Yoon Ah, who is one of the early Hallyu goddesses. Alongside Lee Young Ae and Kim Hee Sun, Song Yoon Ah was one of the most renowned actresses in Korea during the 1990s.
Song Yoon Ah has an impressive career with numerous prestigious awards. In 1999, she was voted as the Most Popular Actress (TV category) at the 35th Baeksang Arts Awards. In 2015, she won the Best Actress award for her role as Han Seung Hee in the drama “Mama”.
In 2017, along with Ji Chang Wook, Yoona, and Jo Sung Ha, Song Yoon Ah contributed to the resounding success of the drama “The K2”. In the series, she played the powerful Choi Yoo Jin, who, despite being a major villain, earned great love from the audience during the drama’s broadcast period.
Alongside her recognition on the small screen, Song Yoon Ah has also achieved decent success on the big screen. In particular, she won Best Supporting Actress at the 2002 Blue Dragon Film Awards, the 2003 Grand Bell Awards, and the 2003 Chunsa Film Art Awards for her role as Han Gyeong Sun in the movie “Jail Breakers.”
Now an established actress, Song Yoon Ah’s last leading role was in the 2021 drama “Show Window: The Queen’s House”. In 2023, she made a guest appearance in the series “Delivery Man”, which stars young actor Yoon Chan Young.
