Many idols appear on this list, but BLACKPINK is not the prominent girl group besides IU and BIGBANG.
In Korea, the annual music chart is one of the measures to affirm the status of Kpop idols as their songs must be heard by the public often in order to surpass many competitors and be honored. Recently, Korean netizens have listed the idols whose songs are in the top 10 of the annual Gaon Chart chart (from 2008 to 2021) and totaled 33 names, but the frequency of their appearances is not the same.
The 1st place belongs to IU as she is the idol with the most songs entering the top 10 of the annual chart. The “National little sister” has 11 songs appearing in the top 10 over the past 13 years. IU’s highest ranking is #1 with Through The Night (2017) and Celebrity (2021).
Notably, 2014, 2017, 2020 and 2021 are the years when IU has more than 2 songs in the top 10. This shows the charm of the female singer born in 1993, when she has been active since 2008 but is still well received by the public.
BIGBANG ranked 2nd with 10 songs. In 2008, the super hit Haru Haru finished as runner-up, marking the first time that the YG boy group entered the top 10. In particular, 2015 is considered BIGBANG’s boom time when BANG BANG BANG, Loser and Bae Bae in turns took the 1st, 2nd and 4th place in the summary chart that year.
Disbanded girl groups also have extremely good achievements, typical examples are 2NE1 and SISTAR. BLACKPINK’s seniors ranked 3rd with a total of 7 songs, from 2009 to 2012 they continuously appeared in the top 10.
As for SISTAR, the group ranked 4th with a total of 4 songs on the annual chart for the past 13 years. In 2012, they had Alone (3rd) and Loving U (4th). 1 year later, the girls entered the list with Gone Not Around Any Longer and Give It To Me, ranked 3rd and 9th respectively.
Wonder Girls, SNSD and BTS tied for 5th place. Since 2008, each group has had 3 songs appearing in the top 10 of the annual chart.
2008 was the explosive time of JYP’s girl group when So Hot took the top spot and Nobody ranked 4th. Two years later, Wonder Girls again entered the annual chart thanks to the song 2 Different Tears which ranked 10th. SNSD topped the 2009 chart with the song Gee and continued to bloom in 2010 with Oh! and Hoot finishing at #5 and #10 in the end.
For BTS, 2019 is the first time they entered the top 10 of the chart thanks to Boy With Luv ranking 5th. In 2021, the boy group from Big Hit has 2 songs, Dynamite (#3) and Butter (#7). Notably, Dynamite was released in 2020 but still ranks in the music chart in 2021, proving that this song deserves to be a global super hit.
Brown Eyed Girls, T-ara, and Zico are the ones having 2 songs in the top 10 of the annual chart for the past 13 years. In addition, the idols that reached the top with 1 song include G-Dragon, Super Junior, miss A, Park Bom (2NE1), Taeyang (BIGBANG), Hwangtaeji, 2PM, Changmin (2AM), Lim Seulong (2AM), f(x) ), BEAST, Apink, 4Minute, EXO, Chungha, GFRIEND, MOMOLAND, iKON, BLACKPINK, Brave Girls, Taeyeon and aespa.
Considering the massive number of songs that entered the top 10 of IU and BIGBANG in the annual charts between 2008 and 2021, it’s easy to see why Knet considers them legendary artists. In particular, even though BIGBANG got into a scandal and lost 1 member, their music is still highly appreciated and enthusiastically received by the public.
Notably, although BLACKPINK is the most famous girl group today, 2NE1, their senior, is praised for their achievements. 2NE1 is the girl group with the most songs appearing in the top 10 of the annual charts since 2008 until now. SNSD, Brown Eyed Girls, SNSD, T-ara… also have remarkable achievements, making many people nostalgic about the golden age of 2nd generation girl groups.
