“Titanic” director criticized for comparing Titan implosion to the Titanic’s sinking

Netizens believe the comparison is spreading fear among the public.

In an interview with ABC News, the director of the famous movie “Titanic” James Cameron caused controversy when he likened the implosion resulting in 5 casualties to the Titanic disaster.

He said, “I’m struck by the similarity of the Titanic disaster itself, where the captain was repeatedly warned about ice ahead of his ship, and yet, he steamed up full speed into an ice field on a moonless night,” Cameron said.

James Cameron persistently said the Titan implosion bore an uncanny resemblance to the tragic Titanic event. He also assured that there had never been any implosion as such at a similar depth.

While the families of the victims are grieving the deaths of their loved ones after U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral John Mauger confirmed the total casualties, many people believe Cameron’s statements are perpetuating irrational fear.

Overall, the online community was against such statements from Cameron. A netizen commented that both him and the CEO of OceanGate – a private company providing services for touring the Titanic – are capitalizing on the incident. What they should be doing now is extending condolences to the victims and the bereaved families.

On June 23, it was announced that 5 people on the submersible exploring the sunken Titanic were dead. The search operation found the debris of the Titan after 8 days. The found location is 490 meters from where the Titanic was located.

Because the Titan imploded, the possibility of bringing the victims’ bodies is reduced to zero.
