On May 30th, Time Magazine published an article titled “How Lovely Runner Nailed Its Finale to Become the Year’s Best K-Drama.”
The media outlet wrote, “Although only half of 2024 has passed, every effort will need to be made to dethrone ‘Lovely Runner’ from the title of the year’s best K-drama.”
It continued, “In a year with many K-dramas that failed to achieve much, ‘Lovely Runner’ defied expectations. It created something greater by mixing nostalgia, romance, a murder subplot, and emotional anguish spanning time.”
Furthermore, it explained, “Instead of prioritizing logical causality, it emphasized emotional narratives, unfolding a love story that transcended fate, completed through the three time slips of the characters.”
The article also highlighted, “Sol’s happy ending was impressive not only in her relationship with Seon-jae but also in realizing her dream of becoming a film director, showing their mutual love and support.”
However, it noted disappointment in the depiction of Sol’s disability as an obstacle that needed to be ‘overcome’ or ‘cured’ to achieve the ultimate happy ending.
‘Lovely Runner’ tells the story of Im Sol (played by Kim Hye-yoon), a fangirl devastated by the death of her idol Ryu Seon-jae (played by Byeon Woo-seok), who gave her a will to live. She travels back to 2008 to save her bias.
According to Good Data, ‘Lovely Runner’ ranked first in TV-OTT drama buzz for three consecutive weeks in the third week of May. Byeon Woo-seok and Kim Hye-yoon also ranked first and second, respectively, in the ranking of most buzzworthy TV-OTT drama actors for three consecutive weeks. Additionally, it secured the top spot in viewership ratings among men and women aged 20-49 across all channels for eight consecutive weeks.
The drama has created numerous ‘Seon-chinjas’ (obsessed fans of ‘Lovely Runner’), and even after its final episode on May 28th, ‘Lovely Runner’ continues to be a hot topic among many people.
