The Unveiling of Teddy’s Girl Group: Could They Become the Next BLACKPINK?

The industry is abuzz with speculation about the future of MEOVV, a group that is beginning to emerge under intense interest from K-pop fans both domestically and internationally.

MEOVV, the first girl group from The Black Label, recently confirmed their debut for next month, setting the K-pop world alight. The reason for the immense buzz around this rookie group lies in their unique debut background.

MEOVV is the first girl group introduced by producer Teddy after leaving YG Entertainment and establishing his label. Having been a leading producer and creative director at YG, where he helped launch iconic K-pop girl groups like 2NE1 and BLACKPINK, Teddy’s involvement has garnered significant attention from K-pop fans even before the group’s debut. Last year, rumors swirled that MEOVV’s debut lineup would include well-known figures like Ella Gross, famous dancer Bailey Sok, and the daughter of Shinsegae’s president, Jung Yoo-kyung, further fueling the pre-debut hype.

With MEOVV now confirmed to debut next month and the gradual unveiling of its members, interest in the group has skyrocketed. The Black Label heightened anticipation by first revealing Ella, who had long been expected to debut, as the group’s initial member.

Ella, who began her career as a child actress and kid model, gained popularity on social media due to her exotic looks resembling BLACKPINK’s Jennie, earning her the nickname “Little Jennie.” Even before MEOVV’s official debut, Ella’s personal Instagram account has amassed over 4.18 million followers. She is well-known among K-pop fans both domestically and abroad, partly due to her friendship with BLACKPINK members. In 2019, she made a surprise appearance on a live broadcast with Jisoo and Rosé, and she has been seen frequently meeting with the BLACKPINK members since then.

Recently, Jisoo publicly supported Ella’s debut by posting on her Instagram, saying, “Congratulations, Ella!” This unprecedented support from a BLACKPINK member has further amplified global fans’ interest.

Following Ella, the other debut members revealed so far—Gawon, Suin, and Anna—have also sparked interest in MEOVV with their unique aura and individuality. In the highly competitive K-pop market, recognition and hype are crucial to a group’s success, and the pre-debut expectations surrounding MEOVV have undoubtedly set a strong foundation for the group’s future.

The Black Label aims to lead new trends in the K-pop scene with trendy music and content. MEOVV has already established their team identity by incorporating five cats as a key element of their concept, solidifying their unique team color. Given the musical style and concepts of previous girl groups (2NE1, BLACKPINK) that Teddy has introduced, and his direction as a producer, MEOVV is also expected to debut with a hip and intense concept.

The industry is closely watching to see if MEOVV can change the landscape of the K-pop girl group market. With the popularity of easy-listening music in the domestic scene gradually declining, there is growing speculation that if MEOVV bets on a trendy girl crush concept, they could shift the trend in the girl group market and achieve explosive growth. Whether MEOVV can live up to these expectations and become the next “monster rookie” to shake up the K-pop market will be worth watching when they debut next month.
