Boy group EXO’s comeback date has been confirmed, but they are facing many uncertainties and challenges.
The agency SM Entertainment announced that EXO’s 7th full-length album “EXIST” will be released on July 10th. This album marks their first album in 2 years and 1 month since the special album “Don’t Fight The Feeling” (2021) and their first full-length album in 3 years and 8 months since “Obsession” (2019).
The anticipation for EXO’s comeback is high, considering the group’s long hiatus and popularity. However, the focus has shifted due to various issues. One major setback is the sudden announcement of member Kai’s military enlistment. Additionally, on June 1st, Chen, Baekhyun and Xiumin reportedly notified SM Entertainment of their intention to terminate their exclusive contracts, citing unclear settlement, refusal to provide settlement details and unfair long-term contracts. SM Entertainment immediately refuted this and claimed, “There was an intervention by external forces in the background.“
The three members involved in the legal dispute expressed their commitment to EXO’s activities and prioritizing the group. SM Entertainment also stated its goal of protecting not only EXO but all of its artists and fans. Despite the ongoing conflict, the members are actively participating in the production of the new album, shooting music videos and engaging in reality shows as they normally would. While Kai cannot join them in activities, his involvement in the album’s production makes it acceptable to refer to this comeback as a full-group return.
EXO has faced numerous challenges throughout their career, including their complex concept, the departure of some Chinese members and so on. They proved themselves and overcame crises in the past, and the current situation is no different.
