The lackluster details of “Big Mouth”: Yoona was overshadowed by supporting characters?

“Big Mouth”, the hottest K-drama of the moment, has its own share of imperfections.

With viewership ratings rising about 10%, the K-drama “Big Mouth”, which stars Lee Jong Suk and Yoona, is the talk of town for the past few weeks. However, good as the drama is, there are still certain imperfections that “Big Mouth” would do better without.

Too many characters

Ever since the start of the show, “Big Mouth” constantly introduces new characters that may or may not have to do with the main story. Since the series focuses on finding the true identity of con-artist “Big Mouse”, audiences are kept suspicious about each and every character.

However, as a consequence of such an extensive character system, it’s hard to focus on characters that actually matter. The screen time of the male and female lead is also reduced, leading to them having less developments.

In addition, many viewers are unable to remember all the people in the show, especially with many not being serving any purposes in the story line.

The overuse of plot twists

A good plot twist can elevate a K-drama to the next level, and “Big Mouth” seems to be fond of such a troupe. At first, the plot twists in “Big Mouth” kept the plot intense and gripping, but by episode 10, they might have become too much.

Now, instead of staying on track and following the thoughts of characters, many people seem to have given up on predictions, as “Big Mouth” just keeps dropping surprising details, one after another, with little prelude to them.

“Forced” explanations

There’s a formula that “Big Mouth” has been using since episode 1. In particular, the series will pose a problem, then have the characters act, and only after would we hear the explanation. This is shown most clearly via the conversation the male lead Park Chang Ho (Lee Jong Suk) has with his wife.

However, as we are more than half-way through, the same formula over and over again gets pretty boring. There is also less suspense in play, as audiences can guess that the character will overcome all their challenges anyway.

The female lead is overshadowed by the supporting cast

Yoona’s character Go Mi Ho is the female lead of “Big Mouth”, who is married to the male lead and always assists him in every step he goes.

While this character is described in the best light, and has proven her capabilities, her story often falls short in contrast with other characters. In addition, the acting performances and storyline of supporting cast members, such as Yang Kyung Won, Kim Joo Hun, Jung Jae Jung, and so on, are written with much more tack compared to Go Mi Ho.

It didn’t help that Go Mi Ho is constantly placed in danger as the show goes on, making her less of a “strong character” in the beginning of the show, and more of a damsel in distress in the second half.
