Squid Game season 2’s production is confirmed, will it surprise the glory of the first season?

Squid Game season 2’s production is confirmed by Netflix, raising raised questions if it can still be successful. 

On June 13th, Netflix announced official plans for the second season of “Squid Game”, as well as the return of Lee Jung Jae, Lee Byung Hun, and Gong Yoo. At this, K-drama lovers couldn’t help but wonder if this globally sensational series can recreate the same phenomenon in season 2. 

Season 1 of “Squid Game” follows a mysterious survival game, where people fought to the death to achieve a prize of 45.6 billion won.

After its release, “Squid Game” became the first Korean series to top the world’s most viewed Netflix series, gaining so much international popularity that it was dubbed a “global craze.” It then went on to land first place in Netflix viewing ranks for the longest time period in history and earned a revenue 40 times more than the original production cost. In addition, the Dalgona game of “Squid Game”, where people had to use a needle to separate shapes from sugar candies, went viral, with numerous viewers around the world attempting the challenge themselves and posting videos trying it on major video platforms.

Thanks to its fame, “Squid Game” was named winner at major US awards such as the Gotham Awards, People’s Choice, Golden Globe, US Actor Association Awards, Spirit Awards, and the Critics’s Choice. Actor Oh Young Soo of “Squid Game” also drew great attention for winning the Golden Globe’s Best Supporting Actor, thus becoming the first Korean to achieve such a prize.

The results are waves of requests for season 2 of “Squid Game”, which originally season took 12 years of writing and planning. Regarding such demands, director Hwang Dong-hyuk said he was aware of the reaction, saying: “I feel like I have no choice before the series is loved so much. In season 2, Ki Hoon (Lee Jung Jae’s character) will return, and he will do something for the world.”

On the 13th, Netflix announced the confirmation of the production of ‘Squid Game’ season 2 through its official SNS and posted a photo containing the works of director Hwang Dong-hyuk. Director Hwang Dong-hyuk said, “Ki-hoon is back. The frontman returns. Season 2 is coming. The man in the suit with ddakji might be back.” He added, “You’ll also be introduced to Young-hee’s boyfriend, Cheol-su. Join us once more for a whole new round.”

Specific details about Season 2 of ‘Squid Game’ have yet to be announced, but according to director Hwang Dong-hyuk, Lee Jung-jae, who plays Ki-hoon, and Lee Byung-hun, who plays frontman, will most likely appear in season 2. Director Hwang Dong-hyuk also opened up the possibility that Gong Yoo, who plays the man in the suit with ddakji, will also return.
