“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” banned from screening in UAE

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” received overwhelming acclaim after it was released in North America in early June.

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”, which has been praised as the best among the works based on “Spider-Man”, was suddenly banned from screening in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) ahead of its release on June 22nd.

Although the exact reason has not been disclosed, speculation is growing that it is because a Pride flag with the phrase “Protect Trans Lives” appeared in the room of Gwen Stacy, another main character in the work.

The UAE Media Committee opposed the release of the work, saying it violates UAE’s values.

Since homosexuality is illegal in some countries in the Middle East and Asia, films featuring sexual minority characters or dealing with homosexuality are often banned from screening by censorship authorities.

The Disney Pixar animation “Buzz Lightyear”, MCU’s “Eternals”, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and director Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” were also banned for featuring homosexual and transgender characters.
