On July 12, Tottenham Hotspur posted a photo of Son Heung-min on social media along with the caption, “Welcome back, Sonny!”, confirming the return of the Korean footballer to the British club.
Previously on July 8 (KST), Tottenham Hotspur’s official channels posted a birthday message: “Happy Birthday to our Captain, our Legend — Son Heung-min.”

Though fans welcomed the warm gesture, questions lingered about Son’s future. His contract expires next summer, and he had been weighing either a move or a one-season stay. However, Spurs-focused outlet Spurs Web reported that Son has made up his mind and wishes to remain at the club for another year.
“Considering his loyalty, Son’s decision is no surprise. He wants to lead Tottenham through another season”, stated Spurs Web.
A Decade of Loyalty and Legacy
Since joining from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, Son has played 454 matches, scoring 173 goals and providing 94 assists. These achievements have cemented his legacy as one of Tottenham’s greatest-ever foreign players.

In the 2024–25 season, he lifted his first major trophy, helping the club win the UEFA Europa League, ending Tottenham’s 17-year title drought.
Despite accolades like the Puskás Award, Premier League Golden Boot and Champions League Final appearance, Son’s advancing age has reportedly made Spurs cautious about offering a long-term renewal. Earlier this year, the club activated a one-year extension option, keeping him at the club until 2026.

Transfer Rumors and Coaching Changes
This summer brought a flurry of transfer rumors. Son received interest from Saudi clubs like Al-Ittihad and Al-Nassr, Turkish club Fenerbahçe (managed by José Mourinho), and even MLS side LAFC, allegedly linked to former Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou.
Amid these rumors, Tottenham parted ways with Postecoglou and appointed Thomas Frank, the former Brentford manager. With Frank’s arrival, the team’s strategy and Son’s role are expected to evolve.

According to The Sun, Son will rejoin pre-season training this week and is scheduled for a face-to-face meeting with Frank, which could shape his future role in the squad.
Leadership and Position Reassessment
Son’s position may shift from winger to a central role, given critiques of declining pace but consistent impact in tighter spaces. With Mathys Tel struggling to establish himself, Son’s experience and leadership remain vital.

“Son is a mentor for young players and a leader in the dressing room,” wrote Spurs Web. “If he stays, he deserves all the praise. He’s still one of the most influential figures on and off the pitch.”
Son reportedly wants to captain the team in the UEFA Super Cup against Paris Saint-Germain and guide Tottenham back to the Champions League. His loyalty, professionalism and passion continue to inspire both teammates and fans — and Tottenham is still his home, at least for another season.
