It was only 14 days after he was investigated on the allegations of evading military service and the accusation this time was much more serious. In particular, he is suspected of attempted murder and inciting assault causing injury. The case has been handed over to the prosecution for further investigation.
While waiting for further updates on the murder case from the police, the Chinese media discovered that Darren Wang had recently flown back to his hometown in Taiwan. He booked a ride through a famous platform, but the car that arrived did not meet his expectations. Not only did he complain about the car, but he also acted violently, calling people to brutally assault the driver and the platform’s dispatch staff. As a result, the two victims were severely injured and even fell into critical condition. After receiving the report, the police requested an urgent arrest warrant for Lee Wei.
The assault and Darren Wang’s aggressive behavior sparked outrage among Chinese netizens, followed by harsh criticism against the actor. With two arrests in less than a month, Lee Wei has become the most scandalous star in the Chinese entertainment industry this year. The media tried to contact his agency for their official statement. However, just like when he was arrested for alleged military service evasion, his representative avoided all calls and refused to comment.
Earlier on February 18, the Chinese entertainment world was shaken when Taiwanese police announced the arrest of actor Darren Wang, along with 10 others, for allegedly evading military service. Notably, law enforcement officers dispatched police cars to his home and personally escorted him to the station for questioning, emphasizing the seriousness of the case.
In the latest statement from Taiwanese police on February 19, of the 11 individuals arrested, eight including Darren Wang were found to have falsified medical examination records to evade military duty. The remaining three were key figures in a forgery network, coaching clients on how to fake physical disabilities such as heart arrhythmia, scoliosis or flat feet to deceive doctors during medical checkups. Darren Wang reportedly spent tens of millions of TWD to forge a heart disease diagnosis, allowing him to evade military service for over a decade.
After two hours of questioning, Darren Wang was released on bail for 150,000 TWD. Authorities announced that he would not face criminal prosecution. However, he must enlist in the military on March 13. If he fails to do so, he will be subject to criminal charges.
Upon leaving the police station, the actor refused to answer media questions. His manager also declined all press inquiries. Meanwhile, his father one of Taiwan’s wealthiest real estate moguls expressed deep disappointment, “I had no idea Darren was dodging military service until I saw it on the news. He never told me anything. I’m truly upset by his actions. He should have fulfilled his civic duty instead of resorting to deceit, which has now caused unnecessary complications and public disgrace.”
On social media, the authorities’ decision not to prosecute Darren Wang has sparked outrage and heated debate. Many believe he should face harsher penalties, as there is sufficient evidence proving that the “Our Times” star deliberately falsified medical records to evade mandatory military service. Furthermore, many suspect that his celebrity status and influential family background played a role in the lenient treatment.
According to regulations, Taiwanese men between the ages of 18 and 40 must complete mandatory military service. The media has reported that Taiwan imposes strict penalties on those who attempt to evade conscription. By law, individuals who engage in fraudulent activities to avoid military service may face fines, imprisonment of up to five years, and restrictions on their employment and educational opportunities.
