Shin Se-kyung’s Best Supporting Actress victory at the Baeksang Arts Awards has become one of the ceremony’s most talked-about moments, with online reactions divided over the final result.
At the awards ceremony held on May 8 at COEX in Seoul, Shin Se-kyung won the Best Supporting Actress award in the film category for her performance in Humint.
The category featured strong competition, including Shin Hyun-been for Face, Yeom Hye-ran for No Other Choice, Jang Hye-jin for Master of the World, and Jeon Mi-do for The King’s Man.

When Shin Se-kyung’s name was announced, the actress appeared visibly surprised as she took the stage.
“I honestly never expected to receive this award,” she said during her acceptance speech while thanking those involved with the project.
However, shortly after the ceremony, online communities and social media platforms became flooded with mixed reactions regarding the outcome. Many viewers had predicted Yeom Hye-ran would take home the trophy, leading to disappointment among some fans.
- I really thought Yum Hye-ran would win.
- I didn’t expect this result.
- The competition was intense, but I’m surprised.
The conversation surrounding Yeom Hye-ran’s loss even continued during the ceremony itself.
Lee Sung-min, who won Best Supporting Actor for No Other Choice, jokingly referenced the situation during his acceptance speech.
“I was so nervous because Yeom Hye-ran was nominated too,” he said humorously. “When she didn’t win, I was cursing internally.”

Later in the evening, Yeom Hye-ran herself appeared on stage as a presenter and lightheartedly introduced herself by saying: “I’m Yeom Hye-ran, the person who just lost.”
Meanwhile, acclaimed director Park Chan-wook also indirectly referenced the issue while accepting the Best Film award for No Other Choice.
“I’d like to thank the judges,” he joked. “Looking at the results, I can see the judging was truly fair.”
He then turned toward Yeom Hye-ran and added with a laugh: “Yeom Hye-ran may not agree with that… but please understand. Shin Se-kyung did a great job too.”
Despite the controversy, many viewers also defended Shin Se-kyung’s win, praising her performance and emphasizing that the strong lineup made the category especially competitive this year.
