Seo Taiji and Bae Yong Joon… Celebrities who withdraw from showbiz to educate their children
Many top Korean celebrities decided to withdraw from the entertainment industry and move to the United States for their children’s education.
It was belatedly known that actor Bae Yong Joon, who paved the way for the first-generation Korean wave with mega-hit K-drama “Winter Sonata”, has left Korea and resided in Hawaii, as well as put up the homepage domain he had owned for over 20 years for sale. Accordingly, many have arrived at the conclusion that Bae Yong Joon has taken steps to retire.
In addition, entertainment officials who worked with Bae Yong Joon in the past shared that the actor is staying in Hawaii with his wife Park Soo Jin and their two children.
Bae Yong Joon’s love for Hawaii has been apparent even before marriage. The temperature there is warm throughout the year, making it a heavenly environment good for enjoying outdoor leisure activities such as golf. In 2012, he operated a high-end coffee shop in Waikiki, Hawaii, and enjoyed a golf trip to the island before marriage, when he was dating Park Soo Jin.
However, it is widely believed that Bae Yong Joon’s recent stay in Hawaii is mostly for the education of his children. An entertainment official also commented on this, saying, “Back in 2017, when she gave birth to her 2nd child, Park Soo Jin was suspected to have received preferential treatment in the neonatal intensive care unit at Samsung Seoul Hospital. Bae Yong Joon probably decided to go to the United States so that his children won’t draw attention at school for being ‘Bae Yong Joon’s children’.”
With the actor residing in Hawaii, it became extremely difficult to see him acting again. Nevertheless, the actor seems to still have an impact over the Korean entertainment industry, having invested in the figure production company Blitzway in 2018. On the other hand, Seo Taiji, a superstar of the 1990s, is staying in the United States to educate his children. Last April, he sold a building he owned near Eonju Station for 38.7 billion won (around 29 million USD). It is known that Seo Taiji bought the building for about 5 billion won in 2002 and held it for 20 years.
Prior to this, he also sold his newlyweds’ house in Pyeongchang-dong, where he had lived for more than 10 years, and moved to another place with his family. The house in Pyeongchang-dong was unable to find an owner for two years, but a buyer appeared in March of last year.
After the selling of his Pyeongchang-dong house was reported by the media, Seo Taiji wrote on his Instagram account, “It was very regrettable to leave because it is a place where my whole family has lived for a long time. However, I decided to move my home to face more exciting and enjoyable things.”
Certain forum users have since speculated that Seo Taiji appeared near Gimpo to enroll his children in an international school. However, the singer’s aides say that he is currently living in the United States.
In particular, an entertainment official who knows Seo Taiji well, said, “Seo Taiji also believed that it was difficult to educate his child in Korea. I understand why he did it, he probably doesn’t want his daughter to grow up to only be known as ‘Seo Taiji and Lee Eun Sung’s child’.”
Moreover, actors Ji Sung and Lee Bo Young are also traveling between Korea and the United States for their children’s education. It is also said that the couple are considering branching into Hollywood.
