BLACKPINK‘s Rosé has carved her name into K-pop history by winning “Song of the Year” at the MTV Video Music Awards 2025 with her global smash hit APT. featuring Bruno Mars.

The award ceremony took place on September 8 at UBS Arena in New York, where Rosé stunned the crowd in a golden gown as she took the stage to accept her trophy.

“I can’t believe this,” she said in English, thanking Bruno Mars and dedicating the award to her 16-year-old self who once dreamed of becoming a global artist. Switching to Korean, she added warmly: “I won this award. Thank you always, I love you,“ mentioning Teddy, The Black Label, and her BLACKPINK members.

This marks the first time a K-pop artist has won “Song of the Year” at the VMAs. BTS was nominated in 2021 with Dynamite, but did not win. Music critic Lim Jin-mo emphasized the importance: “For MTV to give a major award like this to a K-pop act is truly historic.”

Released in October 2024 as a pre-release single from her first solo album rosie, APT. was inspired by a playful Korean drinking game. Rosé herself co-wrote and co-composed the track.

The addictive “apateu, apateu” hook and upbeat rhythm quickly captivated global listeners, propelling the song to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Nearly a year after release, it continues to chart in the Top 40. Its music video is also on track to surpass 2 billion YouTube views.

Critics praise the song’s catchiness and Bruno Mars’s contribution, which added polish and global appeal.

With her groundbreaking win, Rosé has not only elevated her solo career but also further cemented BLACKPINK’s dominance on the global stage.
