“Reply 1988” Director Cast Hyeri And Ra Mi-ran After Seeing Their Real Personalities In “Real Man”
On January 9th, the YouTube channel “channel fullmoon” uploaded a video titled “Live with Won-ho and Mrs. Cheetah Ra Mi-ran”.
Director Shin Won-ho and actress Ra Mi-ran, who showed amazing teamwork in “Reply 1988” and became good friends in real life, showed up in the video and had an interview with PD Na Young-seok.
Shin Won-ho said, “During ‘Reply’ pre-meetings, we discussed the images of the characters in the scripts before casting. Then we decided to choose Ra Mi-ran for Mrs. Cheetah, and Hyeri for Deoksun”.
At that time, Ra Mi-ran and Hyeri were appearing in the entertainment program “Real Man” with the military concept. Director Shin shared, “I was a former entertainment PD, I look at someone and see their real personality rather than their image in dramas”, adding “‘Real Man’ is a program that allowed me to see their real characteristics”.
He continued, “After having a meeting with Hyeri, I was completely drawn by Hyeri. Her real personality was so attractive”, adding “After watching ‘Real Man’, I thought about casting her. I contacted Hyeri and she agreed to join.”
Ra Mi-ran was cast in the same way. Director Shin Won-ho said, “I was determined to cast Ra Mi-ran. I had a meeting with writer Lee Woo-jung and we decided to cast her in the first discussion”.
Hearing that, Ra Mi-ran recalled the past and said, “I suddenly received a request for a meeting. It was not like an audition, and I just casually talked about my life. At that time, I didn’t think I was cast right away. I thought they just wanted to ask something in general for further consideration”.
When Director Shin praised Mrs. Cheetah as the best character in the “Reply” series, Ra Mi-ran said, “I think I benefited the most from ‘Reply’. My acting career faced a turning point after ‘Reply’”. She continued, “Many people love the drama. ‘Reply 1988’ was successful, and I also received huge love from viewers. That’s why I really appreciate the drama. It’s still my favorite project until now”.
When PD Na Young-seok asked her to do more entertainment programs, Ra Mi-ran said, “I think entertainment doesn’t suit me. The tone of my voice is very low and it doesn’t sound exciting when I talk”. Director Shin Won-ho then commented, “It was very fun to play around with Ra Mi-ran. She’s good at reacting to others. ‘Reply’ really showed Ra Mi-ran as herself, that was the important thing”.
